Memphrica—the C.O.G.I.C./ carjacking capitol of America, where there’s a loaded nine tucked in the Bible Belt. I moved here from Los Angeles in 1998—living in my palatial parlor in the projects next door to Graceland Mansion . . . not only because I’m an ELVIS fan club president, but because it’s the only place I could find low rent housing next door to a mansion in America. Nowadays people laughingly refer to the area as “Blackhaven”, but it’s no joke . . . it’s also known to my trendy friends in the suburbs as: “Da’ Hood”, which is another accurate euphemism. While researching the area for my book AROUND ELVIS I was amused to discover that Whitehaven was once known as: “The Beverly Hills of Memphis” . . . that was before it was annexed and integrated by the City of Memphis in 1971. Now it is right smack dab in the middle of: “The Most Dangerous Metropolitan Area in America”. So rather than becoming Germantown—a nearby town that wisely incorporated and saved itself from being overrun by the, shall we say, “Urbanites”—Whitehaven was left with its flank exposed and they were infiltrated. As one Whitehaven resident told me: “When the Whitehaven Water & Power Company became a police station, we knew our way of life was gone with the wind.” Before the community of Whitehaven was annexed, there was only one patrol car servicing the area—good old Car 56. They knocked off patrol at midnight, because everyone was in bed by then. Even though roughly the same number of people live here now, we have a whole division that stays on the move 24-7 just to be one step behind the crime wave. If ELVIS had lived, he’d have gone back to Mississippi and there’d be another mostly empty strip mall where Graceland is. Even the apartment building that I live in was once the grounds of a mansion called: “The Flying Hot Dog Ranch.” There are all kinds of code names for the Black side of town; Hickory Hills is called: “Hickory Hood” and Hollywood is: “Hollyhood”. All of Memphis is dubbed: “Memphrica”; certain parts of Mississippi are known as: “Afrossippi” . . . I’m sure there’s one near you. In L.A., Lynwood is known as: “In-Hood”; Inglewood is called: “Inglehood”. . . South Central Los Angeles needs no other tag. As a White newcomer, I was indoctrinated as to which parts of town were asphalt jungles and by strange coincidence they were all overwhelmingly Black neighborhoods. Nobody warned me about Collierville or Southaven or Bartlett where the working and middle class White folks dwell . . . unfortunately, my neighborhood is on their warning list. This level of societal upheaval is not unique to Memphis . . . in every major and minor city the encroachment of Negroes decimates peaceful White neighborhoods in a few years. As General Robert E. Lee noted, “Everywhere Blacks live goes down; whereas everywhere Whites live prosperity and peace grows” . . . then he wondered how Whites and Blacks could ever possibly coexist when our standards were so radically different. Of course the gap is even greater now than it was then, as Black constituencies go to the mat to protect their people from being educated by the White man or taught the skills that will help them get jobs in the White world or drilled to speak intelligibly so that they can be understood by the White world, which, B.T.W., is also known as “Corporate America”. It is time to face the fact that the slums are not a geographical phenomena or a development of sociology—no one is sentenced to live in the slums. The slums are places where people without pride fail to take responsibility for their upkeep; where people live without respect for their neighbors; where people roll through the hood with their filthy Rap music blaring at earsplitting levels; where people hang out on the front stoop drinking booze and talking nasty to women that pass by; where people deface private and public property with spray paint; where people throw their garbage out the window; where domestic violence settles drunken drugged out disputes; where the drug of choice is for sale on the corner; where life is as cheap as an expensive pair of sneakers. Though I say: “people”, there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind which people I’m referring to, because this does not describe the typical dynamic of White neighborhoods. It’s en vogue these days to blame the influx of Hurricane Katrina refugees for the dramatic spike in vicious crime in Memphis, which is another blatant cop out to address the problem because of the clear racial demographics associated with the unbelievable violent crime rate in this unfair city. So the Christians blame it on the hedonistic, Voodoo people. Of course they’re also Black, so my point remains the same. But let us return to that pre-Katrina year of 2004 and take a look at the crime stats of Memphis, a city that is made up of two-thirds people who are somewhat Black and ninety-plus percent Christian of some sort or another. For those of you keeping score, I will give you the ratio of crimes per one hundred thousand people, so multiply all these total numbers by six-and-half for your complete tally of victims, because there are six hundred and fifty thousand people here. This is how Memphis stacked up versus the nation. Memphis was numero uno for carjacking. The national rate for car thefts was 526; in Memphis the rate was 1223. Burglaries were 883 nationally; Memphis came in at 2335 . . . staggering! Aggravated Assaults—America 340; Memphis 1123. Robberies—the country 195; Memphis 657. Rapes—nationally 35; Memphis 60 . . . there were 400 reported rapes and the belief is that there could be half that many more that went unreported, because of White women afraid to come forward and admit they’ve been sexually mauled by a Black man. Murder—6 out of a hundred thousand for America; 21 out of a hundred thousand for Memphis, which was second only to St. Louis. There were 137 confirmed kills here in 2004 and perhaps as many as 40 more (people reported missing, but no body has been found), so retroactively this number could increase and Memphis could yet take sole possession as the murder capitol for that year. Of those murders, 2 were committed by Caucasians; neither in the commission of a crime. The violent crime index in Memphis was three times higher than the national average and Memphis was the only city in our nation to finish Top Five in every despicable category . . . disgraceful. All of this added up made Memphis “The Most Dangerous Metropolitan Area in America” . . . and it has only gone down the drain from there, as we are on our way to setting a new high for lowdown behavior. In 2007, there were 160 murders in Memphis; only 2 were committed by a Caucasian, neither in the commission of a crime. Now simple math tells me that these Black Christians are sure committing a lot of crimes in these parts . . . I know Julio’s doing some of that stuff, but C’mon People. It sho’nuff ain’t the Jews in Germantown or the Asians in Midtown or even them Wiggers out in Frayser. This is y’alls world and we just be living in it, so handle yo’ binness without a gun, Homes! But this culture and these caucuses, congregations and constituencies enable this crime wave to spread sublimely and overtly, with the philosophy of standing by any Negro anytime for any crime. When the A&E reality detective show 48 Hours set up shop here, the Blacktivists were outraged that the show depicted murderous Memphricans in a poor light and in the next breath squawked about not being paid by the production company for the honor of reporting the news, which included one of the grisliest home invasion murders in American history that left six dead and three others seriously wounded. I get really disheartened when I listen to the preening elected officials charged with bringing direction to this spiraling city of societal chaos and intellectual indifference. We all know politicians are crooks by definition, but these characters take the cake . . . I mean they literally take the cake, eat it all, and leave us to starve. White politicians at least initiate programs that benefit their city or state and country and then illegally skim off the top—the Jimmy Hoffa way. Hoffa improved life for the Teamsters, appreciably, so the workers never cared what his take was. But these charlatans don’t have enough brains to institute successful programs they can bilk, so they just outright boldfaced rip off the down payment then shrug their shoulders when asked about the money . . . when questioned too intensely, they naturally declare that they are being targeted and harassed because they’re—you guessed it—Black. When I listened to Mayor Willie Herenton talking about the missing quarter million bucks earmarked for the Memphis City schools, he sounded like a kid playing the “Dog ate my homework” card. The school board has arguments that dissolve into pencil throwing affairs—no wonder the Memphis school district is in the Top 5 worst school districts in America when you add up the violence and the illiteracy and factor in the teachers who have among the poorest scores and the least education for big city teachers in America. There’s not a lot to attract a highly educated—dare I say: “White”—teacher to come teach in this Blackboard Jungle . . . particularly for the substandard pay and the ongoing threat to their lives from students unhappy with the failing grades they’ve earned. The public schools are absolutely underfunded, because the White families mostly put their kids in private schools—many that use religious denomination to racially discriminate . . . don’t put out a “No Negroes” sign; just put up a sign that reads: “Presbyterian” and the message is received. It is clear that no law of the land will ever force White families to allow their children to have to share a school with Black children unless they are destitute and cannot afford a private school education. It’s not even for the superior education they receive; it is for the extra safety it provides, so that their kids don’t get caught in the crossfire of a doo rag war or have to pay out protection money to one gang or another so they’re not beaten on a daily basis . . . or killed. The affluent schools in beautiful neighborhoods that were handed over to Negroes thirty years ago are practically juvenile detention centers in shooting galleries, where high school football games have final scores and death tolls . . . Hillcrest, Whitehaven, Craigmont were all once fine, progressive schools that have become war zones for Negro angst. White kids left behind in those schools need a rescue operation; they either grow up as victims or Wiggers . . . either is a family tragedy. The worst part of this story is that all of this is destined to get even worse around here in the coming years . . . even in the coming months. Since 2000, 40,000 Whites have abandoned Memphis while 25,000 Blacks and 4,000 Hispanics have taken their place leaving the economy over 10,000 people lighter as well as economically lower on the food chain . . . soon Memphis will not have a solid middle class. Look at all the stores and shops and companies that close. I have to drive to the other side of town to find services, like Kinko’s or a Hallmark; I have to go over the border into Mississippi for haircuts and clothes. But, as ever, our cross to bear comes from God and His self-styled Christian representatives; these politicos fear alienating their Christian support, so they take religiously moral public stances that barely hide their hypocrisy . . . this is where the lack of strong leadership is most divinely revealed. Rather than standing up to the onslaught of these Christian activists and upholding the Constitutional rights of citizens to act as consenting adults, this town fights a moronic rear guard morals war against consensual behavior in the name of God Almighty . . . Jesus Christ! I mean think of this—we have schools so overcrowded that kids can’t sit down; the kids don’t have nearly enough books, but rather than pouring funds into the system to bail it out, these yoyos spend a fortune on a two-year probe into the strip club industry . . . they’ve employed investigators from other states as well as deployed Memphis police officers to troll the strip clubs to fight the crotch-by-crotch war against lap dancing in the name of God. Their expensive in-depth analysis revealed that Memphis has the raunchiest strip clubs in America . . . finally something we can be proud of. Hizzhonor Da’ Mayor keeps calling for more funds for more police to fight his Christian crusade and in order to get it he is closing down libraries. If the Moron Majority would learn to leave people alone, there’d be plenty of police on the streets . . . if they weren’t all out at strip clubs or setting up stings to bust hookers and johns, or dope smokers. But since these activities offend the contrived morality of these alleged Christians, two-thirds of all police resources—money and manpower—is devoted to vice crime . . . not thwarting carjackers or infiltrating the growing gang population; not safeguarding us after sundown against the creatures of the night lurking and slithering about the streets . . . Noper . . . their sworn duty is to keep us from choosing to get high without a prescription and laid for a price. This is the same idiocy that drove the casinos out of Memphis and into Tunica. Now Mississippi has all this disposable cash that they can’t begin to spend—money mostly made from Memphians. In Ole Miss, they’re paving and blacktopping roads, and building parks and schools, and here we have roads that are on par with a Third World country and schools that have black mold seeping out of the walls endangering the lives of children. But the C.O.G.I.C/Baptist regime ran the money out of town . . . that’s because churches do better when folks are down and out and in need of God. They’re still angry at the evil White Jew, Congressman Steve Cohen, for bringing the lottery to town, which rakes in millions for this hard scrabble city. If not for the hundreds of thousands of tourists coming to Graceland to see the home of ELVIS, Fed Ex and the lottery, this town would be an industrial wasteland that would be uninhabitable, which will be the end result around here anyway if we don’t elect some credible candidates; ones who realize that church and state must be kept separate for the good of the community . . . in the name of democracy. Look, if I want to take my hard earned tax dollars to the casino or the shake joint or blow it on a hooker, you only have the right to mind your goddamn business! Oh you can snivel and cast aspersions upon me in the name of your mythical higher power, but you do not have the right to attack me with a law that denies my freedom of choice to choose my activities with consenters. What’s strange is that the strip clubs and the casinos are filled with Black and White Christians from Memphis . . . so I want to know who in hell are these hypocrites that vote all this income down the river? Probably the same nitwits that demand liquor stores close on Sunday. Just think of this, in Memphis more money is spent in the strip clubs or at the casinos on a Saturday night than is spent in church on Sunday morning . . . of course the strip clubs and casinos are open every day. These churches see these profitable industries as taking money out of their pocket. This city needs to abandon the moralistic policies that are Un American and unprofitable for its very survival; Negro leaders need to step up and take responsibility for the criminal climate by denouncing these criminals rather than defending them as part of the Negro way of life and looking for outside sources—namely White people—to blame for so many Negroes going bad . . . if not, Memphis is goin’ places, all right—to hell in a hand basket. I remain here, because it is the convergent crossroads for racial, social and political issues. Nowhere is my presence more necessary. Now more than ever Dr. King’s line: “Something’s happening in Memphis, something’s happening in our world” has never been more accurate . . . Memphis is the microcosm for societal issues.
